When Mr. Tao Xingzhi (18911946),a great Chinese educationist, stopped over at Singapore on July 15,1936 on his way to London to attend the Annual World New Education,Conference,he wa s met at the pier by many prominent figures from local cultural,educational,industrial and b usiness circles as well as the pier by many prominent figures from local cultural,educationa l,industrial and business circles as well as the press.Under the auspices of the You th Mora l Endeavour Association ,Mr,Tao also gave a speech on New Education and China,before he left Singapore on July 17 to continue his voyage to Britain. In 1938 at the end of HIS tour round the world,Mr. Tao returned to China from lndia via Sin gapore.He arrived here on August 25 that year for a brief four hour stopover during which he attended a receptionin his honour held at the Empress Restaurant by representatives of vari ous organisations in Singapore . He briefed the represen tatives on his world tour at the re ception. The two visits paid by Mr. Tao to Singapore aroused, among educational circles here, great i nterest in education and exerted a significant influence on the development of education Sin gapore.
